The Boer goat is primarily a meat goat. Boer bucks weigh between 240-300 lbs and the does weigh between 200-225 lbs. The Boer goat is being used effectively, in grazing, in combination with cattle due to it's browsing ability and limited impact on grass cover.

Records, for this breed, indicate average daily gains of over 0.3 lbs/day. Boer goats reach puberty early, usually about 6 months for the males and 10-12 months for the females. The Boer goat's extended breeding season makes it possible to have 3 kiddings every 2 years. The Boer doe is a low maintenance animal with sufficient milk to raise a kid that matures early.

The Boer goat has a high resistance to disease and adapts well to various climates and terrains.
